The Tallgrass Prairie

Hike the prairie at Homestead!

Hike over two miles of trails through sweeping tallgrass prairie and quiet bur oak woodland.

The 100 acres of tallgrass prairie at Homestead National Monument of America has been restored to present the landscape that greeted the early homesteader.

The tallgrass prairie used to encompass most of the Midwest from Ohio to eastern Nebraska, from Oklahoma to northern Minnesota.

Today, only 1% of the pre-settlement tallgrass prairie remains. What was once a sea of grass is now isolated in protected pockets.

The National Park Service and Homestead National Monument of America are committed to protecting the prairie that remains. Homestead, in fact, is home to one of the oldest restoration projects in the nation. Take some time to explore this diverse and rare ecosystem.
